Dr. Shpirer Uriel

Head of the Pediatric Ophthalmology Department, Wolfson

Education

Dr. Shpirer is a graduate of the Sackler School of Medicine at the Tel Aviv University. He completed (cum laude) an internship at the Shiba Medical Center, Tel ha-Shomer, and proceeded to complete (cum laude) a specialization in ophthalmology at the Tel Aviv Medical Center (Ichilov).

Upon completion of specialization, Dr. Shpirer received a United States Government specialty visa (O-1 visa) and embarked on a two year fellowship at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, Florida – the best and the largest Ophthalmology Department in the United States. During this period, Dr. Shpirer specialized in the following:

  1. Cataract surgery, anterior segment and corneal transplants.
  2. Pediatric eye diseases and strabismus surgery.

During his stay in the United States, Dr. Shpirer had served as a staff member at the University of Miami’s Miller School of Medicine, mentoring students and interns, and taking part in extensive research.

Dr. Shpirer is the only one in the country, and one of only few in the world, who holds a dual specialization in corneal and pediatric eye diseases, and because of this, complex cases of children with corneal diseases, blepharitis and allergies are referred to him.

Dr. Shpirer works as a senior ophthalmologist at Ichilov and a consultant at Dana Pediatric Hospital. As part of his work at the hospital, Dr. Shpirer surgically treats very complex cases of cataracts, corneal transplants and strabismus surgery (including match stitching technique) both in adults and children. Over the years Dr. Shpirer had traveled to perform complex cataract surgeries in Nepal and was also included in a US delegation which travelled to the Dominican Republic to perform strabismus surgeries.

From a research standpoint, Dr. Shpirer is a lecturer and a faculty member of the Tel Aviv University School of Medicine. He has presented his research works at more than 30 domestic and international conferences, and has published over 40 papers in the international professional journals, including original research, case studies, book chapters and more. For this work Dr. Shpirer has received several awards including an Outstanding Lecture Award (The Israeli Society for Vision and Eye Research) and the ARVO International Travel Grant (USA). He is a regular reviewer of scientific research from around the world for professional ophthalmology papers.

In his private clinic in Ramat-Gan, Dr. Shpirer treats children and adults in the areas of his expertise: pediatric strabismus, cataracts and corneal diseases. His private surgeries are performed in private hospitals approved by the Ministry of Health and equipped with the most advanced medical equipment.
